Durability of Wooden Hay Racks:

We often hear people say they don't want a wooden hay rack because they're worried it'll only last a few years compared to a metal hay rack.

However, wood experts refute such fears and remind us of old wooden buildings that have survived for centuries. Ancient wooden buildings, e.g., log and half-timbered constructions, which have been preserved to this day, are the best proof of the durability of wood. This also applies to wooden structures that are repeatedly exposed to direct precipitation.

Why Have Many Historic Wooden Buildings Survived for So Many Years?

Wood is naturally very well suited to different weather conditions. Temporary contact with water, such as driving rain, has no negative effects as long as the wood can dry out again afterwards.

Our own experiences using wood for hay racks have been entirely positive so far. That's why we recommend only wooden hay racks for implementing the Raufomat feeding system.

It is important that the wooden hay rack has a waterproof roof and is dry at the base. Temporary moisture, which can dry off again, is no problem. There is no need to worry about premature wear and tear.

Statements from the wood industry:

    • Wood that is constantly dry has an almost unlimited shelf life.
    • Covered wood in outdoor areas only weathers on the surface, which is noticeable by the wood turning gray.
    • This graying is not a disadvantage, but rather the wood's natural protection against damage from UV radiation.

"Wood needs air to breathe. It needs to age in order to last a long time!"
